C16 Timber
C16 is the most common Strength Class used in the UK, and it is normally specified by architects or builders for domestic floor joists or the studs in timber-framed walls. In fact, it has been estimated that up to 90% of most projects could use C16 without any major design changes.
C16 is a strength Classification of structural timber that allows for a number of strength-reducing defects (knots, grain deviation, wane etc) and which also permits unlimited amounts of defects that do not affect strength - such as blue sapstain and pinworm holes.
For this reason it is common for specifiers to ask for the higher Strength Class of C24, in the (mistaken) belief that it will 'look' better than C16; but which it will not necessarily do - because C24 also permits unlimited blue sapstain and pinworm, since they do not affect the strength performance of the timber members.
