TTF Careers Day Held at BSW Carlisle

TTF Careers Day Held at BSW Carlisle

Teachers and careers advisers with influence over 6,000 young people visited BSW’s Carlisle sawmill for the latest event staged by the TTF’s Education Training & Careers Committee. Kindly hosted by BSW, the event acted as a trial for possible future events in the North West Timber Trade Association’s region, possibly in the Liverpool or Manchester areas later in the year.

Bryan Crennell, Eve Johnson and Harry Stevens spoke on behalf of BSW as the local employer, detailing the company’s investment of £50 million in the next three years, the expansion of its products and services and the daily work of its staff. The remainder of the pan-industry speaker team tackled their own specialist areas, and comprised Peter Fox of the Forestry Commission, Michael Donaldson of Donaldson Timber Engineering, Dr Dan Ridley-Ellis of Napier University, David Elliott of the Institute of Carpenters, and Camilla Hair of SCA Timber Supply.

Andrew Masterman of BSW, who arranged the event as an experiment for NWTTA, commented: "It’s difficult for everyone in the trade to recruit the right calibre of people largely because, as the careers advisers reaffirmed to us, our sector is still invisible to information, advice and guidance professionals. But we need to take the first step, and the trade needs more companies to come forward and hold similar events in their local area."

The careers adviser event took place on 15th April.
