BSW Timber, the UK's largest sawmilling group, hosted an important packaging sector conference at its Carlisle mill.
Delegates from the Timber Packaging and Pallet Confederation (Timcon) discussed the future direction of the industry before touring the 15 hectare mill site.
Timcon, which represents the interests of the timber packaging industry, comprises the UK's leading manufacturers of timber pallets, packing cases/crates and export packers.
BSW Timber's Director of Sales and Marketing Alan Wheat said: "This was a productive conference attended by the principal figures in the UK's packaging sector. BSW Timber is proud of its close involvement in this particular sector and is committed to providing their sustainable timber needs.
"The pallets and packaging market is an important part of our business, and accounts for 2 million M3 of softwood used in the UK."
John Dye, president of Timcon, said: "We are grateful to BSW Timber for their co-operation and assistance. As the UK's largest sawmilling business, BSW Timber plays a crucial role in meeting the supply of softwood for many of ours products. The timber packaging industry provides a vital and indispensable service and its importance to the UK economy becomes more significant as global markets expand."
