Carlisle Floods

January 1, 2005

BSW Timber, the UK's largest sawmilling business, has today (12 January 2005) announced that its Carlisle sawmill is now fully operational following a disruption to the power supply caused by the extensive flooding and high winds in the Carlisle area over the weekend.

Production at its Carlisle sawmill was halted from Saturday 2.00am until Monday 6.00pm as a result of the power failure. However, the site was not damaged as a result of the severe weather.

During the temporary closure, three production shifts were cancelled. Some 85 employees, whose homes were affected, were informed not to attend work to ensure the welfare of their families. A skeleton team of sales staff, customer service staff and forklift drivers were on hand to dispatch over 20 essential customer orders. BSW also leveraged its UK network of sawmills to assist with diverted telephone calls to ensure continued service for its customers.

David Burd, site manager of BSW in Carlisle says: ?Our Carlisle staff was kept fully informed of what was going on with regards to the weather conditions and when the sawmill would be fully operational.

"Unfortunately, three of our employees have experienced extensive flood damage to their homes and we have provided clothing, food and have advised them to take a week's leave on full pay. We have also offered them any further assistance they may require. We must also commend all of our staff for their patience and co-operation during this difficult time."
