Boat of Garten Supports Local Air Cadets

March 1, 2005

Twenty Royal Air Force (RAF) cadets based in Aviemore are flying high after receiving a donation of £200 from BSW Timber, the U'?s largest sawmilling business, to support its annual cadet award ceremony and community volunteer activities.

BSW Timber was approached by the 1068 DF squadron to provide high-visibility jackets to aid the cadets when they are carrying out car parking duty and marshalling at local community events and to provide funds for some much needed trophies for the annual cadet award ceremony.

Established three years ago, the squadron currently has twenty cadets aged between 13 to 17 years old who receive flying lessons, learn navigation techniques, marching drill, first aid and find out all about the role of the RAF. The training can also count towards them pursuing a career in the RAF when they leave full time education, with the Aviemore squadron linked to airbases at RAF Nairn and RAF Kinloss.

Speaking about the support provided from BSW Timber's Boat of Garten mill, mill manager, David Mills says, "The squadron provides local kids with a variety of activities to keep them entertained as well as offering them the chance to develop real-life skills
such as collaboration, teamwork and organisation, all of which future employers deem essential. We are more than happy to support this local cause as the cadets are a great asset to the community."

Commanding officer, Mark Johnston 1068 DF says, "Every year we host an awards ceremony for our cadets. This is the first time that we have been able to present the cadets with actual trophies and commemorative shields highlighting their achievements
over the past year. Without BSW Timber's support this would not have been possible.

In addition, the provision of the high visibility vests will ensure that our cadets can be clearly seen when helping out at events such as car parking duties and the provision of first aid."
