BSW Timber Invest £750,000 in Cutting Edge Technology At Carlisle Mill
October 1, 2005
BSW Timber, the UK's largest sawmill, is to introduce the very latest in cutting-edge technology to its sawmill in Cargo, near Carlisle.
The company is to invest almost £750,000 in bringing a new state-of-the-art online planing facility to the mill, which employs 133 people.
The new planing system, which includes a dedicated packaging line, will be completed by January 2006 and will allow BSW to increase its product range of high quality machined kiln dried timber, known as Easi-Edge. The Carlisle site is now set to more than triple its production capacity of such specialised and added-value timber products.
Dave Burd, Carlisle Mill Manager said the investment is a response to increasing customer demand for a more sophisticated end-product. "The market for sawn timber is changing," he said. "Customers, especially those from the construction industry, are now seeking a smoother and easier to handle product like Easi-Edge which has a wider range of finishes rather than just rough sawn product.
"The timber is designed to conform to industry specifications, making construction projects easier. Introducing new and innovative products like Easi-Edge means we are providing our customers with products that are moving timber forward and ensuring that we increase the sales of added value timber products" he added.
The new planning facility includes sophisticated extraction systems that maximise operational efficiency and environmental performance. An integrated tool room and new, state-of-the-art knife grinding equipment will also improve the quality and delivery of the Easi-Edge product.
